Wigan Athletic are celebrating 75 years of football this year, after two recent seasons in the top flight of English football. Wigan Athletic Football Club was born in 1932 after it was decided that the town needed a team after previous clubs, Wigan Borough, Wigan Town, Wigan United and Wigan County all fell through the trap of liquidisation. Wigan Athletic built their way through non-league football for 45 years until they gained promotion to the football league in 1977. Since then they have climbed through the ranks to gain Premier League status. To say these two seasons have been a rollercoaster is an understatement. A League Cup final and tenth place is a great achivement for some team who were not expected to gain ten points! (courtesy of Rodney Marsh). Also they avoided relegation on the last day this season by beating Sheffield United 2-1 to take them above that very team by one gaol difference point. So if your reading this Rodney Marsh, we get the last laugh.
